Custom Curtain FAQs

Choosing made-to-measure curtains should not feel complicated.

Here you'll find answers about measuring, fabric selection, blockout performance, sheer curtain privacy, curtain styles, installation and care.

If you cannot find the answer you need, contact Lumarni and send us a photo of your window, existing track or curtain rod, together with your approximate measurements. Our team can help you choose a suitable curtain for your space.

Popular Questions

What are made-to-measure curtains?

Made-to-measure curtains are produced specifically for your space using the measurements, fabric, colour and curtain style selected in your order.

Compared with standard-sized ready-made curtains, custom curtains can provide better window coverage, more balanced folds and a finished look that complements your interior.

What is the difference between blockout and blackout curtains?

In Australia, blockout curtains is the more commonly used term. "Blackout curtains" is also frequently used to describe curtains designed to reduce light entering a room.

Lumarni offers several light-blocking levels, allowing you to choose according to your room, lighting conditions and budget:

  • 100% Blockout Curtains: Suitable for bedrooms, children's rooms, media rooms and spaces where maximum light control is required.
  • Premium 99.99% Blockout Curtains: Provide near-total light blocking while placing greater emphasis on fabric texture, colour and overall appearance.
  • 99.8% Blockout Curtains: Significantly reduce external light and improve privacy, making them suitable for bedrooms, living rooms and everyday household use.

The light-blocking rating for each fabric will be clearly stated on the relevant product page.

Please note that these percentages describe the performance of the fabric itself. Overall room darkness will also depend on curtain width and drop, window coverage, the position of the existing track or curtain rod, gaps around the curtains and the construction of the window.

For the best room-darkening result, make sure the curtains extend beyond the top and both sides of the window wherever possible.

Which curtains are best for bedrooms?

Blockout curtains are generally the best choice for bedrooms because they reduce external light and improve night-time privacy.

Lumarni offers 100%, 99.99% and 99.8% blockout options, so you can select a fabric based on your sleeping habits and the amount of light entering the room.

For greater flexibility, consider combining:

  • Sheer curtains for softer daytime light
  • Blockout curtains for night-time privacy
  • Two curtain layers that can be opened and closed separately
Which curtains are best for living rooms?

Sheer curtains are a popular choice for Australian living rooms because they soften strong sunlight while maintaining a bright and open atmosphere.

If you also need night-time privacy or stronger light control, sheer curtains can be paired with blockout curtains to create a layered window treatment.

Can Lumarni help me choose my curtains?

Yes. Please send us:

  • A clear photograph of the window
  • The type of room
  • Approximate window or track measurements
  • Your preferred colours and interior style
  • Your main requirements, such as privacy, blockout, thermal comfort or softer light
  • Photographs of your existing track or curtain rod
  • Your Australian postcode

Our team can use this information to recommend a suitable fabric, curtain style and configuration.

Measuring and Ordering

Should I measure the window or the existing curtain track?

This depends on whether you already have a suitable track or curtain rod.

If a track is already installed, you will generally need to measure:

  • The total track width
  • The drop from the curtain hanging point to your preferred finishing position

If you are using a curtain rod, check the usable hanging width, rod diameter, drop from the hanging point and whether the decorative finials affect the curtain opening.

If you have not yet installed a track or rod, first decide where it will be positioned. Measure the entire area you want the curtains to cover, rather than measuring only the glass.

Should curtain measurements be provided in millimetres?

Yes. We recommend providing all measurements in millimetres to reduce conversion and rounding errors.

  • Width: 2,400 mm
  • Drop: 2,500 mm

Avoid converting measurements from inches unless absolutely necessary.

How do I measure the curtain drop?

Measure from the actual hanging point on your existing track or curtain rod to your preferred finishing position.

Common finishing positions include slightly above the floor, lightly touching the floor, below the window sill, or extending from ceiling to floor.

Measure the drop on the left, in the centre and on the right, as floors and ceilings are not always perfectly level.

What should I check before ordering custom curtains?
  • Curtain width and drop
  • Curtain opening direction
  • Curtain heading or hanging style
  • Fabric and colour
  • Selected blockout rating
  • Whether you need one or two curtain layers
  • Nearby handles, air conditioners and furniture
  • Whether your existing track or curtain rod is compatible

If you are unsure about any detail, contact Lumarni before ordering.

Can I change my measurements after placing an order?

Contact us immediately if you notice an error.

Because made-to-measure curtains are manufactured according to your confirmed specifications, changes may not be possible after production has started. Please check every measurement carefully before confirming your order.

What happens if I provide incorrect measurements?

Your curtains will be made using the measurements confirmed in your order.

If incorrect measurements are supplied, the curtains may need to be altered or remade, which may involve additional costs. If you are unsure, send us photographs of your window, track or curtain rod together with your measurements before ordering.

Sheer Curtains

What types of sheer curtains does Lumarni offer?

Lumarni offers three sheer curtain collections:

  • Standard Sheer Curtains
  • Day & Night Sheer Curtains
  • Premium Day & Night Sheer Curtains

Each collection offers a different combination of fabric construction, texture, drape, light filtering and daytime privacy.

How much privacy do sheer curtains provide?

The level of privacy depends on the sheer curtain collection and the lighting conditions inside and outside your home.

Standard sheer curtains soften sunlight and can provide a degree of daytime privacy when it is brighter outside than inside.

Lumarni's Day & Night and Premium Day & Night collections use a specially woven, multi-layer fabric structure. During the day, when it is brighter outside, this construction helps reduce visibility from outside while maintaining natural light and a view from inside the room.

Actual privacy performance will also depend on the difference between indoor and outdoor light levels, fabric colour and weave density, interior lighting, window direction, viewing distance and viewing angle.

No sheer curtain can guarantee complete privacy under every lighting condition. At night, when the lights are on inside, we recommend pairing sheers with blockout curtains for greater privacy.

What are the benefits of Day & Night sheer curtains?

Lumarni's Day & Night collection uses a specially woven, multi-layer fabric structure designed to:

  • Reduce visibility from outside during the day
  • Maintain natural light
  • Preserve the view from inside
  • Soften strong sunlight
  • Help filter UV rays
  • Allow machine washing in accordance with the product care instructions

Privacy and visibility will vary depending on lighting conditions, fabric colour, viewing angle and window direction.

What is different about Premium Day & Night sheer curtains?

The Premium Day & Night collection also uses a multi-layer fabric structure that provides daytime privacy while maintaining natural light and outward visibility.

Compared with the standard collection, Premium Day & Night curtains place greater emphasis on fabric texture, drape and overall interior appearance.

They are particularly suitable for living rooms, main bedrooms, large floor-to-ceiling windows and premium residential interiors.

Do Lumarni sheer curtains help filter UV rays?

Yes. Lumarni sheer curtains help filter UV rays and reduce the amount of strong sunlight reaching furniture, flooring and interior furnishings.

UV performance may vary between fabrics. Where a product has a specific tested UV rating, the result will be shown on the relevant product page.

Can Lumarni sheer curtains be machine washed?

Yes. All Lumarni sheer curtains are machine washable, although the exact washing instructions may vary between fabrics.

  • Check the relevant product page and care label
  • Remove hooks and other detachable components
  • Use the recommended water temperature and wash cycle
  • Do not use bleach or harsh cleaning products
  • Avoid washing curtains with clothing that has zips or sharp fittings
  • Dry the curtains according to the product care instructions
Can sheer curtains be paired with blockout curtains?

Yes. This is one of the most practical combinations for Australian homes.

Layering sheer and blockout curtains allows you to use sheers during the day, close the blockout curtains at night, and use both layers when stronger light control or privacy is required.

Before ordering, check that the existing installation area has enough space for two curtain layers.

Blockout Curtains

Will blockout curtains make my room completely dark?

Lumarni offers curtains with fabric ratings of up to 100% blockout.

However, a 100% rating describes the light-blocking performance of the fabric itself. Light may still enter around the top, sides, centre opening and bottom of the curtains, or through gaps between the track or rod and the wall.

Correct measurements, sufficient window coverage and appropriate installation are just as important as the fabric rating.

Can blockout curtains help keep a room cooler?

Well-fitted blockout curtains can reduce direct sunlight and create an additional barrier between the window and the room.

Actual performance will depend on the selected fabric, window and glass type, direction of sunlight, curtain coverage, installation method and the condition of the window.

Where a product has specific tested thermal-performance data, it will be stated on the corresponding product page.

Can blockout curtains reduce outside noise?

Some Lumarni curtain fabrics are specifically designed to help reduce a degree of external noise entering a room.

Performance will vary according to fabric thickness and construction, curtain fullness, window coverage, installation, window sealing, wall construction and the source and frequency of the noise.

Where a product has tested sound-reduction or acoustic-performance data, it will be clearly stated on the relevant product page.

Curtains are not a complete architectural soundproofing system and cannot eliminate every type of noise.

Can blockout curtains be machine washed?

Most Lumarni blockout curtains are machine washable. However, washing and care requirements vary between fabrics.

The correct cleaning instructions will be displayed on each product page and care label.

  • Follow the recommended water temperature and wash cycle
  • Remove curtain hooks and detachable components
  • Do not use bleach or harsh cleaning products
  • Avoid washing curtains with items that have zips or sharp fittings
  • Dry the curtains according to the product care instructions

Curtain Styles

What curtain styles does Lumarni offer?

Lumarni offers several curtain styles, including:

  • S-Fold Curtains
  • Korean Pleat Curtains
  • Curtain Rod Styles

Each style creates a different appearance and requires a compatible hanging system.

What are S-fold curtains?

S-fold curtains, also known as wave curtains, form smooth and consistent folds from the top to the bottom of the fabric.

They create a clean, contemporary appearance and are particularly suitable for modern Australian homes, floor-to-ceiling windows, large glass doors and layered sheer and blockout curtains.

What are Korean pleat curtains?

Korean pleat curtains feature structured pleats at the top of the curtain, creating an even and defined appearance.

Compared with S-fold curtains, Korean pleats create a more prominent heading and a fuller, more tailored look. The final appearance will depend on the fabric thickness, drape and curtain fullness.

What are curtain rod curtains?

Curtain rod curtains are designed to hang from an exposed curtain rod.

Because the rod remains visible, its material, colour and decorative finials can become part of the room's overall design.

Before ordering, check the rod diameter, usable width, installation height, weight capacity and compatibility with the selected curtain style.

Should I choose S-fold, Korean pleat or a curtain rod style?

Choose S-fold curtains if you prefer clean, continuous and contemporary lines.

Choose Korean pleat curtains if you want a more structured heading and a fuller, tailored appearance.

Choose a curtain rod style if you already have a suitable rod or want the rod to form part of the interior design.

Installation and Accessories

Does Lumarni sell curtain tracks or curtain rods?

No. Lumarni specialises in made-to-measure curtains and does not currently sell or supply curtain tracks or curtain rods.

Customers need to provide and install a suitable track or rod before hanging their curtains.

Before ordering, check that your existing system has the correct dimensions, weight capacity and hanging configuration for your selected curtain style.

Are curtain hooks included with my order?

Whether curtain hooks or other accessories are included will be stated on the relevant product page and in your order details.

If you are unsure whether your existing system is compatible, send us photographs of the complete track or rod, runners or rings, together with its width and the rod diameter where applicable.

Can I hang Lumarni curtains myself?

If you already have a suitable track or curtain rod and it is compatible with your selected curtain style, you may be able to hang the curtains yourself.

If a new track or rod needs to be installed, the correct fixing method will depend on the wall or ceiling structure and the weight of the curtains. If you are uncertain, we recommend using a qualified installer.

Curtain Care

What should I do if my new curtains arrive with creases?

Temporary folds or creases may appear after packaging and delivery. This is normal.

Lumarni curtains are heat-set during production. Once correctly hung, the fabric will gradually relax under its own weight and through normal use. It may take up to 30 business days for the curtains to settle into their intended shape.

If you would like to remove visible creases sooner, the curtains may be ironed where permitted by the product care instructions.

  • Confirm that the fabric can be ironed
  • Use the temperature specified for the product
  • Test a small, inconspicuous area first
  • Do not leave the iron in one position
  • Follow the specific instructions for coated blockout fabrics
What should I do if the curtain folds lose their shape?

S-fold curtains: Open the curtains fully and gently guide each wave from top to bottom. Make sure the folds alternate evenly, then stack the curtains neatly in the correct direction for a short period.

Korean pleat curtains: Check that the hooks are positioned correctly. Gently arrange each vertical fold so that it follows the structured pleat at the top.

Curtain rod styles: Check that all rings, eyelets or fabric loops are evenly spaced. Arrange the fabric from top to bottom and avoid allowing it to gather on only one side.

Fabric Samples and Colours

Should I order a fabric sample before buying curtains?

Yes. We recommend viewing a physical fabric sample before ordering made-to-measure curtains.

The same fabric can appear different depending on natural and artificial light, wall and flooring colours, the time of day, screen settings and surrounding furnishings.

Place the sample beside your window and view it during both the day and evening.

Will the curtain colour look exactly the same as it does online?

We make every effort to display colours accurately, but screens and room lighting can affect how a colour appears.

A physical sample is the most reliable way to assess the colour, texture, transparency and appearance of a fabric in your home.

Minor colour variations may occur between production batches. If you require several matching curtains in the same room, we recommend ordering them together.

How can I order fabric samples?

Visit the Lumarni fabric sample page and select your preferred fabrics, or contact us with the product names and colours you would like to see.

Information about sample limits, delivery costs and estimated arrival times will be displayed on the fabric sample page.

Production, Delivery and Returns

How long does it take to make custom curtains?

Lumarni curtains are made according to your confirmed measurements and specifications.

Production time may vary depending on fabric selection, curtain dimensions, order quantity, curtain style, current production volume and delivery destination.

The current estimated timeframe will be provided on the product page, quotation or order confirmation.

Does Lumarni deliver throughout Australia?

Delivery availability and charges depend on the destination, curtain dimensions and order contents.

Different delivery arrangements or additional charges may apply to some regional and remote areas. Please enter your postcode during ordering or contact Lumarni to confirm delivery availability.

Will I receive tracking information?

If tracking is available for the selected delivery method, the details will be provided after your order has been dispatched.

Orders containing several curtains may be delivered in more than one package.

Can made-to-measure curtains be returned?

Because made-to-measure curtains are produced according to the customer's selected dimensions, fabric and style, they generally cannot be returned due to a change of mind.

If your order arrives damaged, faulty or different from the confirmed specifications, contact Lumarni promptly and provide your order number, photographs of the product and packaging, and a description of the issue.

This policy does not exclude any consumer guarantees or rights available under Australian Consumer Law.
